What is a hybrid battery?

A hybrid drive battery is a type of rechargeable battery used in hybrid electric vehicles to power the electric motor and supplement the internal combustion engine. They’re high-voltage batteries that store electrical energy, which is used to keep your car running or assist the petrol engine in certain conditions like driving at slow speeds. Hybrid drive batteries are charged through a process called regenerative braking - when you apply the brakes, the car absorbs that energy to charge the battery. Unlike EVs like Tesla or Nissan Leaf, hybrid drive batteries are not plugged in to charge.

Benefits of a Hybrid car battery replacement

What no hybrid owner wants to see: Check Hybrid System dash warning

What are the signs of a faulty hybrid car battery?

There are several tell-tale signs that the battery in your 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid is on its way out, but nothing can replace getting the car diagnosed by a licensed professional using proper scan tools. But we understand you'll want to know what to look out for, so here are some symptoms to monitor:

  • Check Hybrid System warning is showing on the dashboard
    • Fuel consumption is increasing
      • Petrol engine is engaging earlier than usual, or on all the time (this means the battery is not providing power)
        • Faster cycling (charging and discharging of the battery) which you can see by monitoring if the battery reaches full bars more often
          • Fan is noisier than usual; the fan is used to deliver cooling air to the battery and it's engaged more if it's running hot (which is a sign of the battery not being able to hold charge like it used to)

Can a hybrid battery be repaired?

Yes and no. We do no repair any particular battery; that is, we do not believe in cell swapping (more about that here). What we do instead is we take batteries that are retired from other vehicles vehicles and we rigorously test those batteries to determine which parts can be safely reused in a vehicle, and which parts should be recycled.

If you want to learn more about how to recondition hybrid batteries, take a look at our video which takes you through the steps.

How much does a hybrid replacement battery cost?

The cost varies by make and model, and the size of the battery. Bigger car means bigger battery and more parts required to build a quality replacement pack. So bigger cars like Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota Estima tend to have more expensive batteries than smaller cars like Toyota Aqua or Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Our pricing is all-inclusive - you will not be charged extra for delivery or installation, so there are no surprises. Supply and fit pricing starts at $2,000 to $3,000 (including GST) for smaller hybrid electric vehicles.

What types of replacement batteries are available?

We offer two different types of batteries in our range: rebuilt batteries and new aftermarket batteries.

            Call the team in Australia

Call the team in New Zealand

            Rebuilt battery

Rebuilt batteries (also referred to as reconditioned, refurbished, or remanufactured batteries) are built with grade (tested) high-quality cells. All parts are thoroughly inspected and tested before being rebuilt into a complete battery pack. Rebuilt batteries are best suited to private use up to 12,000km per year. They are backed by a 3 year / 40,000km warranty (whichever comes first). Fitment is part of the service and included in the price. Our network of hybrid and EV specialists spans New Zealand and Australia.

            New aftermarket battery

New aftermarket batteries are built with brand new cells. Our cylindrical cells have improved airflow, allowing for better cooling and performance. The chemistry, specification and storage capacity is identical to genuine; but it is generally cheaper and comes with a better warranty. These new batteries are ideal for rideshare, taxi and private use above 12,000km per year. They are backed by a 3 year / 200,000km warranty (whichever comes first). Fitment is part of the service and included in the price. Our network of hybrid and EV specialists spans the nation.

How long do hybrid batteries last?

It all comes down to how you use the car. If you drive a taxi or rideshare vehicle, then odds are you are making more kilometres than the average person. And your battery will be working harder than the average battery and due for replacement. Then there are other factors like weather, road conditions and driving style that can impact on how much work the battery needs to do. More work = more wear = sooner replacement.

That said, we take great care to recommend a replacement battery that is right for you and how you use your car. If you do a lot of kilometres each year, we recommend a new aftermarket battery that comes with a 3 year/200,000km warranty. If you don't drive as much, a rebuilt battery will offer great value for you and it still comes with a 3 year warranty, or 40,000km, whichever comes first (not available for all models). All our batteries are rigorously tested before they leave our facility, and installed by local specialists, so you can rest assured that your hybrid is in top shape. We're backed by one of Australia and New Zealand's largest automotive parts and accessories suppliers; we'll be around should you ever need us in the future.

Do hybrid cars need battery replacement?

This is another "it depends" answer. Many hybrid electric vehicles last the distance on the original battery that was fitted to the vehicle at the factory. You may need to replace the high voltage battery on your hybrid before the car reaches end of life because you happen to drive a lot of kilometres each year. Because a hybrid car also has a petrol engine, you can usually keep driving the car without replacing the battery. The question is: does it make sense to burn more fuel at current petrol prices, or do you want the benefit of a cheaper and greener drive? For most people, the choice is pretty simple - investing in a quality replacement battery to keep your beloved hybrid on the road just makes sense.

Late review but a massive thank you to John and his team for resurrecting my 2007 Prius. John knows batteries like Google! So knowledgeable and informative. Patient and accommodating. He managed to get me a refurbished battery pack considering he has such a long list of customers. No more triangle of death. Thank you John. The car is still running smoothly since the battery pack change 2 years ago!

10 months & 23,000 km since the hybrid battery in my 2006 Prius was replaced with a reconditioned one. The unit & the car have functioned perfectly since. I found John most interesting & helpful answering all my questions (& speaking to my inner-geek about how the hybrid system works & functions [cells, voltages, tolerances, etc] before & during the repair process which took about 2 hours.
